Can Transformational Breath improve asthma? Check out this case study by Andria Falk


Transformational Breath® is proving beneficial in the treatment of asthma, sometimes enabling a reduction or withdrawal of medication. (1)

When Greg* began Transformational Breath® sessions he struggled to walk upstairs. He had been hospitalised three times with severe, painful, life-threatening asthma attacks. He relied on three different prescribed medications. A psychiatrist had recognised an emotional link between his breathing difficulties and severe emotional abuse he had experienced during his childhood, a link made by Goyeche, J, et al, (2)

I began by analysing Greg’s breathing: I noted that he was using his back muscles to control his breathing and his outbreath seemed forced – a pattern typical of asthma sufferers. His sub-sternal muscles were barely functioning, preventing air flow into his abdomen.

The first few sessions focussed on Greg relearning how to breathe naturally, using his diaphragm and the whole of his respiratory system. The use of sound and gentle movement also helped to relax and energise him and improve the flow of his breathing. In sessions, he gradually habituated to a circular continuous breath pattern, enabling his breathing to gradually open up where it had previously been blocked. This in turn enabled him to integrate some of childhood trauma he had experienced that had been dormant in his cellular memory for all those years and affecting his physical wellbing without him realising it. Like other asthmatics, he benefited from pressure on different ‘body mapping’ points, similar to acupressure, especially on his abdomen and chest.

After 3 sessions, with his Dr’s agreement, Greg was able to begin to reduce his medication. After 18 months he was able to take part in a 10 kilometer run. He described feeling much lighter, freed from both his asthma and the burden he had been carrying of his childhood experiences. He now finds that regular Transformational Breath® self-sessions enable him to prevent a build up of stress in his body. He rarely needs to use his remaining inhaler of Ventalin these days.

Does laughter yoga work with Transformational Breath?

Yes it certainly does!   Andria Falk, Rachel Falk and Rachel Upton, all  Birmingham-based Transformational Breath afficionados have now trained in Laughter Yoga with Morag Wylie, Transformational Breath Co-trainer and Laughter Yoga Trainer, based in Falkirk, Scotland.   Rachel Falk is now running a not-for-profit Laughter Club at Kings Heath Quaker Meeting House on the first and third Saturdays in the month at 10.30 am. It’s a fantastic and uplifting way to start the weekend!  Maybe see you there!





New research shows the power of just one session of Transformational Breath

There are inspirational case studies and lots of short breathing exercises to try at home. If you have issues around depression, anxiety, stress, childhood trauma etc that you are struggling with and would like to see if breathing can make the difference, then this is the book for you. Birmingham Breathes is delighted that its’  UK parent organisation Transformational Breath Foundation UK has been awarded the accolade of ‘ Best Complementary Medicine Organisation for 2014 by the prestigious Institute for Complementary and Natural Medicine. We at Birmingham Breathes have been closely involved in developing our national organisation and are delighted that Transformational Breath has been honoured in this way.

Can Transformational Breath help with non-specific lower back pain?


People don’t generally come  to Transformational Breath for help with this condition.  More likely they will tell their facilitator about it to make sure they can breathe in a  position that’s both  beneficial and comfortable.  And we certainly dont make claims that we can cure any medical conditions.  Nevertheless, some people are reporting that sessions of Transformational Breath are definitely easing their  back pain.  Judith Kravitz ,  Founder of the International Transformational Breath Foundation, advises:  “I have worked with many people who have found relief from chronic back conditions through the full opening of their respiration, releasing tension and strain and  thus creating a freer flow of energy in thebody  and activating  the body’s natural healing ability.”    There are also medical studies that correlate poor breathing with lower back pain.  Something to think about!  Please contact us if you would like a copy of Andria Falk’s paper on this issue.

Andria Falk writes about the Presence Process

After her successful talk about the Presence Process for the Tree of Life on the 12th September Andria has written some more about it for us. She writes:

“Transformational Breath® founder, Judith Kravitz, ‘adopted’ the Presence Process three years ago, seeing it as a powerful accompaniment to Transformatonal Breath®.  They are now widely regarded as a ‘sister modalities’, each linking with and benefitting from the other.

Written in the form of a book, The Presence Process is a 10-week self-help programme devised by Michael Brown.*  It requires a 15-minute morning and evening session of connected breathing through the nose, the reading of an inspirational chapter of the book each week and the use of  a specific intention.

You are gently taken into the essence of the programme, which  is that  incidents that upset us in adulthood have a resonance with ‘forgotten’ situations  in our childhood where we pushed down and denied our feelings.  As the programme develops, you   gradually  acquire the tools to enable you to harness any upsetting incident in your current daily life, welcoming the associated  feelings and seeing the person or situation as a helpful messenger.  You are then shown how to trace back those feelings to your childhood, allow yourself to genuinely feel them and then to gently integrate them.

So  how does this fit with Transformational Breath®?    The Presence Process is a gentle and slow process that can be undertaken at home from the outset.  People who follow this process often benefit from some sessions with a Transformational Breath® facilitator, who will have expertise in integrating blocked emotions and in connected breathing and can support a more focussed process for you. Similarly, people who find Transformational Breath® beneficial can also benefit from The Presence Process, as it  provides a  unique tool to understand day-to-day stresses and their  specific source in childhood.

Both Judith Kravitz and Michael Brown recommend each other’s programmes, and I can’t recommend the Presence Process too highly, especially the Revised Edition.  It is phenomenally useful in making sense of seemingly-irrational feelings of fear, anger or sadness  that sometimes  arise, often repeatedly and apparently from nowhere, in every-day situations,  out of proportion to the current situation.  It’s amazing to be able to own those feelings and learn to respond rather than to react to them, to make sense of their original source and then integrate them through the breathing.   It’s a profound way of  enabling us to really feel and manage our emotions.  Michael Brown, who healed himself from a painful and incurable illness by using his programme sees it as a means of preventing addictive behaviors as well as physical and mental illness.
